My Favourite Lipsticks

When it comes to make-up, I'm a complete lipstick hoarder. I just can't get enough of them. When choosing a lipstick the options can be totally overwhelming - which is why I'm putting this together for you, so you can get an idea of how the lipsticks show up and what their consistency is like. I will start by saying that I'm very much a Matte lip wearer, as I like my lip colour to be solid and bold and last throughout the day. So I don't have a whole lot of sheer, moist lipsticks in this collection. But I still think some of them are great and you'll want to wear them regardless.

I'll confess that a lot of my lipsticks are MAC, I went through a rut where these were all I bought - but for good reason! Their texture and formula really is fantastic, the range of colours is so extensive, and at £15.50 I think they are a really good middle ground in price between high street and high end make-up, but with the quality of a high end product. But lately I have started venturing out a bit, particularly with the brands you find in the make-up aisle of Boots.
As I've listed so many MAC Lipsticks, I'll just post the link for them all here

My lips are now incredibly chapped, my bin is full of facewipes, and my iPhone memory is full of selfies. But alas, we all make sacrifices in the name of beauty!

Right pucker up, let's crack on shall we?

I kept my make-up quite simple for these photos, just so you could get a real idea of how the lipsticks look without the influence of heavy eye make-up or contouring. I've gone for my basic every day make-up look, here's a list of the products I used if you are interested.

Some of these pinks are fairly similar, but pink is my favourite daytime colour! It's just so easy to wear and goes with pretty much anything, which is why I have so many favourites that I rotate between.

MAC - Brave - £15.50

Now this colour isn't actually far off my natural lip colour, but that's why I like it. It's a gorgeous soft pink that you could wear with pretty much any outfit with any make-up look, and it's perfect for during the day. This is a really reliable lip colour, it doesn't fail you.

This is a 'Satin' lipstick

MAC - Mehr - £15.50

This is one of the more famous MAC shades, it really is brilliant. It's soft, but not so soft you can't see it, and suits so many different skin tones. Plus I think it sits nicely in the middle between daytime shades and night-time shades. So there are few times you can't wear it. The colour is a bit bolder, so you can't rely on the lipstick alone to provide a neat line on your lips. So I have used the Real Techniques Lip Brush

This is a 'Matte' lipstick

MAC - Craving - £15.50

This is the bolder of the pink shades. But not so bold that it's terrifying, it gives you a nice dramatic lip but it's still pretty wearable so you could get away with it a lot more when it comes to occasion or outfit. I also think it would suit a variety of skin tones, because my lips are naturally quite pink it does come out more pink on me and extends slightly to the plummy side. I also lined my lips with the MAC Lip Pencil in 'Soar'

This is from their 'Amplified' collection

No7 - Blushing Tulip - £9.95

I don't know why I've never properly considered No7 as a good make-up brand, maybe the constant freebies they gave away a few years back made me think that. But judging from this lipstick they really are brilliant, they sit nicely just above the regular high street brands, but they are still more accessible than a high end brand. I bought this lipstick through their colour match made service - if you aren't familiar with this then it's this funny little machine they use on your skin that scans your skin colour to find the perfect foundation shade, but they also list out a bunch of lipsticks that are supposed to match your skin tone. At first glance I thought this pink was garish and pretty awful, but after trying it on I loved it. It's such a lovely, warm, soft pink. The texture starts off moist, but turns matte after about 10 minutes. I wear this during the day all the time, especially as it makes the blue in my eyes pop! To neaten up the edges of my mouth I applied it with the Real Techniques Lip Brush, and you can find the lipstick here

This comes from their 'Match Made Stay Perfect' collection

I actually own far more reds than I have listed here, but a lot of them are fairly similar in shades. So I've just picked out my favourites for you.

MAC - Viva Glam I - £15.50

Let me start by saying that this is my all time favourite lipstick. If you left me on a desert island and I could only keep one forever, it'd be this one (although I would honestly rather have a plane or a raft, if we are being realistic about this). You can tell how much I love it by how battered the packaging is, this is one of the only lipsticks I have that's nearly run out, I just absolutely love this shade of red. It's dramatic but still quite soft, the texture of the lipstick is brilliant and easy to put on. Just love love love. So wearable and such a nice shade. Because of it's blue-based red formula, I just think it instantly makes your make-up look ready for the evening and that bit more sophisticated. I always use a lip pencil with this as it's such a bold colour that I think it needs it, but I have to confess it's an old No7 one that I don't think is actually stocked any more. However someone at MAC would easily be able to find one that matches it for you! You can find the Viva Glam lipsticks here

This is from their 'Matte' collection

MAC - Dubonnet - £15.50

Now I do realise that this isn't dramatically different to Viva Glam 1, but what can I say? I've got a weakness for red lipstick. However this is a bit more red based than Viva Glam 1 as well as being more moist in it's formula, it's a very deep wine colour so it makes your make-up look that bit more dramatic. I lined my lips with the MAC Lip Pencil in 'Brick'

This is from their 'Amplified' collection

Body shop - Colour Crush Lipstick, Red Siren (101) - £10

I've never really bought make-up from The Body Shop, but after buying this lipstick I'm struggling to understand why! It's brilliant. Every girl needs a dramatic red lippy in their make-up bag and this definitely hits the spot, I know Ruby Woo by MAC is the famous one - but I honestly can't stand it, it's so dry that it's horrible to wear. What is brilliant about this lipstick is it starts off incredibly moist with this fantastic bright red shade, then if you give it 10 minutes it dries and settles into your lips as a really nice matte red that stays on really well (not dissimilar to the No7 lipstick I listed previously). As dramatic reds go, this hits the nail on the head. Although when buying lipsticks from The Body Shop - a prior warning to always swatch! I found the colours on the packaging and of the product itself were very different to how the lipsticks actually came out. Great lipsticks none the less though. I lined my lips with the MAC Lipstick Pencil in 'Redd', and you can buy the lipstick here.

Top to bottom: Viva Glam I, Dubbonet, Red Siren

I don't actually wear brown very often, as I think it doesn't always compliment my skin tone as I am so fair. But I have a couple of lovely browns that I think would look great on lots of people.

Maybelline - Colour Sensational, Pink Brown (620) - £6.99

This is a really lovely, subtle brown. I think you could wear it with most make-up looks, and certainly during the day. The only thing I'd say is it's very moist in it's formula so it doesn't have great staying power (even a lipstick sealer doesn't work on it). But it smells amazing and is good for a quick, easy top up throughout the day on your lips. You can find it on the Boots Website.

MAC - Mocha - £15.50

This shade is a little 90s, but I think it looks great in Autumn with some warm toned brown eyeshadow. I wouldn't wear it every day as it doesn't match everything, but it's a really nice soft, warm brown  - and if you have light coloured eyes it'll definitely make them pop! I lined my lips with the Rimmel 1000 Kisses Lip Liner in 'Spice'

Left: Maybelline Pink Brown. Right: MAC Mocha

Rimmel - Lasting Finish Lipstick, Starry-Eyed - £4.99

Now this lipstick I didn't categorise by colour, as I feel it's a bit of a weird hybrid between all of them. I bought this recently and I love it, I've always been a fan of Rimmel lipsticks. Out of all of the Boots make-up brands their lipsticks are the best in my opinion, they do a fantastic range of colours that go on really well. And plus they all smell pretty delicious. This is a gorgeous evening colour, a really nice deep, vampy coloured plum. I lined my lips with the Maybelline Colour Sensational Lip Liner in 'Midnight Plum', and you can buy the lipstick here

As I always wear such dramatic lipsticks, people ask me how I get them to stay on. In all honesty when I'm buying a lipstick I don't particularly purchase it based on it's longevity on your lips, as I think the majority of lipstick tends to rub off when you are eating and drinking anyway. So I cannot recommend Lipcote enough! I've used this stuff for years and it's fantastic. It's a lipstick sealer and it really does work wonders, it helps my lipstick to stay on all evening. However, just a prior warning that when you put it on you will feel a slight sting for a couple of seconds - but if we can handle a bikini waxes and eyebrow plucking, then this is a breeze to be honest. Generally I find that it's quite hard to get hold of in store in Boots or Superdrug as a lot of branches don't stock it, so I recommend just purchasing it off their website for £3.99, as the postage is free! I've tried copycat versions from other brands, but in my opinion they just aren't as good.

Right, I'm off to smother my lips in Carmex! As they are so dry after taking all of those photos. Hope I helped you out a bit, and I won't be held responsible for any dents in your bank account ;).

Which lipstick shade is your favourite?
